Purchase the best tyres for your vehicle

It’s important to invest in the right tyres. Bridgestone’s Turanza T005 delivers outstanding fuel economy combined with high mileage and fantastic wet performance. While tempting to go “budget”, in the long-term this can be more expensive due to poor fuel economy, increased wear rate and poor strength, whilst also compromising safety.

Check your Tyre Pressures

It’s really important to make sure your tyres are inflated to the correct pressure as indicated in your owner’s manual. Incorrect pressures can negatively affect performance and safety. Underinflated tyres require more energy to roll and this results in higher fuel consumption.

Check your Tyres

You should also check if your tyre wear is even. Uneven wear can be due to incorrect wheel alignment or incorrect pressures and will increase fuel consumption. Check your tyres for wear regularly. Try the 20p test to check the tread depth, insert a 20p into the tread, If any part of the border of the coin is visible the tyres could be under the legal minimum of 1.6mm and need changing.

Easy on the accelerator

Excessive speed is the biggest fuel-guzzling factor so having a light right foot and ensuring all acceleration is gentle is very important to fuel-efficient driving. Use the highest gear possible whilst keeping within the speed limit and change through gears quickly avoiding high revs.

Anticipate

Try to anticipate what’s going to happen in front of you by looking well ahead. If cars are slowing ahead, let off the accelerator early to avoid unnecessary braking. Slowing down and then having to accelerate repeatedly uses more fuel than keeping a steady pace.

Beware of cruise control

Cruise control only aids fuel economy when driving on a constant flat surface, hence why it is usually best reserved for motorway driving. Cruise control can not detect changes in elevation ahead and therefore will lose speed then accelerate while going uphill using excess fuel.

Lighten the load

Only carry what you need once you arrive at your destination. Also, take off roof bars and roof boxes when not in use as these create wind resistance and cause your car to use more fuel. The harder your car has to work to keep moving, the more fuel it will use.
